Cups to Grams Converter & Weight Charts
Convert cup measurements into exact grams. Because a cup measures three-dimensional space (volume) while grams measure physical mass, every conversion depends entirely on the ingredient's density.

Why an Ingredient is Required to Convert Cups to Grams
A frequent question from home cooks is: "How many grams is 1 cup?" The scientific answer is: it depends entirely on what is in the cup.
A measuring cup represents a fixed volume of space (240 milliliters in the US Legal standard). Different culinary ingredients fill that space with vastly different densities:
- Airy & Powdered: 1 cup of cocoa powder weighs only 85 grams.
- Fluffed Grain: 1 cup of all-purpose flour weighs 120 grams.
- Granular & Crystalline: 1 cup of white sugar weighs 200 grams.
- Solid Fat: 1 cup of butter (2 sticks) weighs 227 grams.
- Dense Liquid: 1 cup of pure honey weighs 340 grams.

3 Common Mistakes When Converting Cups to Grams
Scooping Flour Directly
Plunging your measuring cup directly into the flour bag compacts the powder, cramming up to 150g or 160g into a single cup. Always fluff flour with a fork, spoon it gently into the cup, and sweep level with a knife.
Using Dry Cups for Liquids
Dry measuring cups are designed to be leveled flush at the brim, making liquid surface tension spill easily. Use a clear glass or plastic liquid measuring cup with graduated markings for water, milk, and oil.
Ignoring International Cup Sizes
A US Legal cup is 240 mL, but a Metric cup in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand is 250 mL (+4.2% larger). A classic UK Imperial cup is 284.1 mL (+18.4% larger). If baking from an international cookbook, check cup origin!
